Emotional Regulation & Concentration Improvement for Adolescents(ERCIA)

Emotion regulation is like a homeostatic thermostat. It can moderate emotions and keep them within a “manageable range” so that one can cope.

Emotional regulation, also named emotional self-regulation, is the capability of manage emotions of one’s own. Emotions are as essential to us as breath. We breathe to live and we live experiencing emotions of kinds all the time through our life. However, most of us ignore the exist of emotions just as we ignore our breath even if emotions are a big part of life for us. We are just controlled by many different emotions every moment without awareness. These emotions come with their highs and lows. We enjoy some of them but dislike some of others. We may refer the latter as “bad mood”, or “unpleasant emotion” and we always try to get over them, but sometimes they are not so easy to get rid of, or even more difficult to manage. Struggle with such emotions at times becomes a normal task, and everyone has this experience. However, if you have difficulties managing your emotions for a long period of time, it can lead to mental health problems. This requires us to develop the ability of managing our emotions. Such is one of the reasons why we need to learn emotion regulation

In addition, emotion regulation can also help us succeed in our daily activities such as making an appropriate response in challenging situation, maintaining mental health and wellness, having empathy for others, and increasing pro-social behaviour, etc.

For parents, teachers and students, perhaps the most exciting news about emotional regulation is that it is helpful for students to improve their academic performance. This finding has been supported by a lot of research. The reason is that once equipped with the ability to control and manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of their own, students will have more self-awareness, self control, and be more confident about their learning capacities, and they will study harder and persist in the face of challenges.

There is a wide range of knowledge and skills included in emotional regulation learning, and they are designed age-basis.
