Acculturation

Acculturation refers to the process of two cultures coming into contact with each other and thus bringing impact on the language, behaviour, and beliefs of the person who is experiencing the host culture. In a sense, this process may be viewed as a form of cultural assimilation. That is, a person’s “home” culture is taken into another culture until he/she has little or no remaining cultural identity. However, this may make us feel pessimistic thinking about acculturation. As a matter of fact, a mature culture may bear the characteristics of being tenacious and coherent. Interestingly and fortunately, the general definition of the term also implies that although the minority culture is often more heavily impacted than the majority one both cultures might impact each other equally.

Sojourners or expatriates are the terms that refer to the people staying in a host culture. Acculturation as an international phenomenon, has been attracting many studies in anthropology, cultural ethnography, history etc., and great achievement has been made. For example, in the process of acculturation, Robin Scarcella proposes a four-stage theory of acculturation. These 4 stages include “honeymoon”, “culture shock”, “adjustment” and the fully acculturation stage. Some other researchers also provide their theories on acculturation as well. Understanding these theories may help us overcome culture shock and make a positive contribution to a more pleasant and successful experience of living or study in a host country.

Every year there are many people from world wide coming to visit, study and live in Australia and New Zealand. International students and immigrants from China are one major group among those expatriates. In the process of acculturation, they have many stories to share. No matter they are negative or positive, stand or fall, these stories would deserve attention for us as they show the indomitable, harmonious and cooperative spirits of Chinese collectivism and some unique nature of Chinese culture as well. The following blogs are efforts to present, discuss and analyze what difficulties the sojourners, in particular, students from China may experience in their process of acculturation and how they may do to overcome these difficulties effectively. Some information on helping resources in Australia and New Zealand will also be presented.

Join Us

Through our counselling service and psychoeducational training, we can provide teachers, students, parents and caregivers with the right knowledge and tools to apply in classrooms, families and any other settings so as to make a difference in life. That is, being facilitated with inner wisdom and strength such as high level of emotional intelligence, positive mindset, effective problem-solving ability, assertive communication skill and mindfulness practice, all of us in this learning community will make a change in our real-life settings.

Students, in particular, those studying in a western country will benefit from our counselling service as we may work with you through our service either in English or Chinese depending on your option. Moreover, cultural competency is one important factor contributing to the effectiveness of counselling service. Either the student or the counsellor should genuinely understand each other in terms of what the counsellor really means and what the students really desire to achieve. This genuine understanding includes but is not limited to tone of voice, the words used, the body language etc, and the most important, the meaning behind and the way of thinking. It is not unusual that people from different cultural background may find it is hard to understand each other. In our counselling service, the RESPECTFUL Model works as a guideline addressing cultural diversity and we take the person-centred perspective, remain an open mind and respectful attitude towards clients without judgment throughout the sessions.

Parents of international students definitely hope their younger generation enjoy a peaceful and successful stay in a western country. They are more than happy to pay for it. However, for many parents it is almost impossible to accomplish such a wish to make themselves feel at ease due to the long distance, let alone the psychological gap between some parents and their offspring.

How international students should do to enjoy a peaceful and successful life in a host country receives great attention. Scholars propose their theories, governments and educational institutions provide help to international students to overcome challenges such as cultural shock and language barrier. However, each students as a unique individual person, has individual attributes, goals, needs and experience in their acculturation. Counselling as a customized and professional service, may help students with their acculturation based on their uniqueness. This special advantage should be highlighted as students can make a good use of it during their stay in the host country.
